“Via ferrata” is an Italian term that translates as “railway”. It is a form of horseback riding that involves the use of metal viaducts, cable bridges, and other types of metal fixation to facilitate passage over vertical or steep rock surfaces.
Via ferrata it is
Via ferrata allows people without climbing experience to explore mountain terrain safely and comfortably. These routes usually require skill in handling technical equipment and the use of special equipment such as carabiners, seat belts and helmets.
Now many mountain areas in different countries such as Italy, Switzerland, France, Germany, Austria and Spain have many via ferrata for tourists.
Via ferrata equipment
In the minimum version, there is a safety rope or chain along the entire length of such a section, fixed with steel anchors at a certain distance from each other. Additional options are footrests in the form of steel brackets, corrugated plates or ordinary pins. If the site allows, it can be equipped in the form of metal stairs. The most complex so-called “sports type” of Via ferrata can include suspension bridges, as well as suspension crossings, which are actually particularly strong ropes stretched in parallel.
Even the insurance package includes a special “via ferrata self-insurance” and a universal insurance system or gazebo.
Where are the Via ferrata tracks
The beginning of the construction of the via ferrata was laid in Austria as early as 1843. Their installation began most actively in the 90s of the last century, and they are still widespread mainly in the Alps, where there are more than 1,000 of them. Climbers engaged in climbing in such areas, or as they are also called “ferratists”, can use via ferratas either for free or for a small fee to improve your skills. The level of difficulty and length of such Via ferrata are different.
Currently, the construction of via ferrata is at its “peak” in Europe: every year, starting from 2008, about 50 new ones are built every year.
In Ukraine, there is only one Via ferrata route located in the Crimea, in the Kizib-Koba gorge, 60 meters long.
What are Via ferrata routes for?
Via ferrata is an almost ordinary rope park, only it is not located on supports, but on natural rocky areas (you can also create a route in the city center). This entertainment allows ordinary people with average physical fitness to touch nature. If the location of the route is picturesque and popular, then there will be no shortage of visitors and tourists, and this is an economic component that can contribute to the development of national parks and reserves.
